I just got an ISSN for my ezine!!! I think it's because I was persistent and polite with the person at the other end. At first they said that my publication didn't qualify. I'm guessing that they didn't really read the content and just glanced at it and assumed it was just a blog. I emailed them back and explained that the reason I published my newsletter online instead of in a paper format is because of my concern for the environment. They checked the ezine again and granted me an ISSN. The fact that my ezine had content instead of just ads helped as well. YAAY Me.

As my own e-zine will not be launched for a 2-3 more months, I'm wondering how having an ISSN # might be beneficial.

I'm always happy to hear of people being concerned for the environment!

Keep up the good work,
Joyanne

Yeeehaaa! That's great DeAnna!

Would you be able to provide us with a brief "how-to" get an ISSN# as well as why you chose to do this?

thanks for any further info,
lisa

The website for obtaining information about issn numbers is http://www.issn.org
The reason I decided to do that is because I thought it might give my publication some credibility. That's the short answer. I'll be able to go into more detail later today. I've got to run an errand.

Dear DeAnna --

Good for you! There was a big push on about five years ago for newsletter publishers to get an ISSN to establish credibility for their ezine so you're on the right track. That buzz has died down quite a bit.

But, it doesn't cost anything and if it raises your "expert" level in your reader's eyes, why not?

When I had my newsletters, I got one for one of them but didn't bother for the other and it didn't seem to make a difference. If at some point in time you are going to offer your newsletter for sale, you will be one step ahead of the game.

Best regards,

Denise O'Berry

Apr 08, 2005 9:24 pmWhat ISSN is... re: re: re: Persistence and politenes pays off#

Hi Monica! :) ISSN stands for: International Standard Serial Number

This was written on my site about 5 years ago but it still holds true today: Getting an ISSN for Your Ezine In fact if you use my search engine in the upper right corner of the site, you'll find about 3 pages of discussion on ISSN and whether it's worth it or not.

I say go for it as there is no downside. The only blunder that I did was post the wrong ISSN for about 2 years before I caught it (I had transversed one from another). -Chris
