Hello Everyone,

It's a bit quiet in here, but perhaps not for long :)

Email format is certainly a topic that seems to bring out strong opinions in people. However, this time, my question is not about plain text vs html.

I currently send out a newsletter (via constant contact), and greater than 95% (?) of my subscribers have opted to receive html. I can't blame them...its too difficult to read plain text anymore (some of it is like reading run-on sentences), and most of my subscribers appreciate a slight larger font (we are OlderWiserWomen after all :)).

I am switching to using the broadcast feature (in plain text) of my shopping cart and I will then link my subscribers to either an html page OR a pdf document on my website. (I am also considering this same format for some e-courses I'm developing).

I have many reasons for this. It gets them to my website, they can read something that is visually pleasant and easy to read (font size), and for those on dial up they don't have to worry about size of the download, etc. For those that like to print and/or read offline, they will be able to do that as well.

(I'd also like to figure out how to add rss to these pages).

My main question boils down to this: is either one, html or pdf preferable and why? I've seen both used, but don’t know if there are any behind the scenes advantages of one of the other.

I appreciate all comments.

Namaste,

Barbara --

I recommend you use HTML. That way once people click they are there. And if they've been receiving your ezine in HTML, it will look familiar. If you put it in PDF format, they have to (typically) download the file and then open it. And it's often an excruciating wait for Adobe to open.

Go for HTML. You won't regret it.

I agree with Denise on this one. Go with the HTML for the reasons she suggested.

Also, HTML, in my understanding is more readily indexed by the search engines than PDF files, so there's another advantage.

Good luck and let us know how it goes for you!

Best,
lisa

Hmm.

I think I'd be careful about this. In my experience, and based on what I've read, people very often just won't click through to read something. If it arrives in their e-mailbox, they'll read it (assuming they originally signed up for it at least, which obviously is the case here!). But if they get an e-mail that requires them to click a link, they just ... aren't ... going ... to ... do ... it.

After reading through the posts, what do you consider an Ezine. I started an online magazine called Jack at http://www.jackmagonline.com and set up a format that looked like a magazine but on the web. Does an ezine have to be emailed? or would you just consider Jack any other website?

Hi Barbara,

I would choose HTML over PDF IF you are making the online eZine available to the public for the exact reason that Lisa suggested... search engines love HTML and are just getting accustomed to PDF.

However, if the eZine is for SUBSCRIBERS ONLY, eg. you password protect it or have it on the site and don't care if SE's find it or not, then you might consider PDF.

Here are a couple of examples you might like.

Take a look at what CAN be done with PDF:

http://www.affiliateclassroom.com/magazine/December05.pdf

And here are some things you can do with HTML and CSS. (Good for SE's too.)

http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=/186/186.css&page=0

http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=158/158.css

There are over 100 choices to view on http://www.csszengarden.com/

Good luck with your choice,
Angela

Jack,

Your online magazine is considered an eZine. The name refers to electronic magazine so it can be emailed or online.

Your first edition looks good. And the articles and photos are great. I'd assume it's designed for singles in Boston and if that's the case, it's right on target.

Good luck with it,
Angela
