This might be a silly question but do you have a separate database of your contacts or clients versus the info you have with ezezine/ConstantContact or whatever you use to stay in touch with people by email? I lost all my data when my harddrive died and I'm trying to start over - in a very organized way.

We have forms on our website to sign up for the ezine and also a form for them to contact us for a price quote. I was thinking that I'd have a detailed database in either Access or Excel for people who are my established clients. On the flip side, anyone who contacted us for more info or whatever other reason would be on the email list. I guess the decision will depend on whether I expect to do direct mailings or not. Email is cheap and in my business we get so many dreamers who contact us with no intention of using our services. For this reason, I thought I would limit mailings to former clients only.

How do you handle your contact info?

I'll also post this on the marketing forum to see if anyone there has any input also.

Thanks,

Sherry

Hi Sherry,

I'm a stickler for only adding folks to my email (ezine) list who have specifically double-opted-in to receive it.

Back in the day you could just add all of your customers to your list. Anymore, this practice can ge you into a lot of trouble given bulk-email legislations and what not.

What you can do to get your customers into your email permission list is to offer them to join your list when they make a purchase. That affirmitive consent can go a long way in protecting your bootie and your deliverability.

Hope this helps,
lisa

I'd do double opt in for sure Lisa. In addition to my hating spam I do keep the bootie covered :)

What I was really getting at though is maintaining a database of my customers in general. For people who signed up for the ezine, you could contact them through that method. For the others and your "special clients" (maybe they bought from you before etc) who you may want to follow-up with by postcards or something, where do you keep their addresses, birthday info etc?

What? You want to create *relationships* with these people?? (just kidding.)

See my answer to your PM of how to do this with EZezine.

best,
lisa
