Dionna Sanchez | | My newsletter goes out once a month and is text only. I would love to go to an HTML format also, but can't at this time.
I was thinking of offering an alternative of having people click on a link and visit a website page where they could view the whole newsletter issue with graphics, etc. My question is...for those of you who offer this - do you find that you have a drop in subscribers because they know the link address and can just click on the same one each month? How could I offer this alternative without losing my email subscribers?
I want this option to be a bonus - not in lieu of the text newsletter.

Dina here. I think your theory about the link is right-on. The purpose of the emailed newsletter is to keep you in the customer's mind. Even if they don't read it, or take their time in reading it, you're able to send that email reminder about you and your business.
I use Constant Contact to create my company newsletter. It creates the newsletter, in html format, but you don't have to know html to use it. Coincidentally, this month I posted some tips on Constant Contact on my Ryze page. Check out the article if you like!
Also, Constant Contact offers a free trial period for new customers, which is great because if you don't like it, you don't have to keep their service. Good luck!

Thanks for your response. I thought about creating a password to view the newsletter online but my software does not support doing that.
I do really like my newsletter list host...they just don't offer an option to import graphics into my newsletter right now.
I'll keep brainstrorming. :)

The link I give in the TEXT of my e-zine always points to a different page each month. This is great, because through my web traffic logs, I can track exactly how many people clicked on each particular issue. Furthermore, it allows me to easily archive all the e-zines on my web site, which raises my Google rankings.
Yes, people can go to my web site and look at the latest issue, instead of being a subscriber. However, most people will not go to that trouble. I don't think you have much to worry about.

On my aol email, a link has to be copied and pasted and I often dont bother
In my hotmail account, I have to wait for a new window to open..and often cant be bothered
A link only n/letter would not be a bonus for me

I've seen very few ezines use this tactic successfully. Why? Usually because the content is not compelling enough for subscribers to take the extra step(s). Or, just a link is offered with no reference point.
I too subscribe to oodles of ezines. Of all of them that use the click to read more tactic, there's about 2-3 that are compelling enough for me to click through.
If you are going to offer a link to online full version, best-practice is to offer an "article teaser" so people know what's on the other end of the link, rather than just a link.

Thanks for the input. I had thought about just deleting the page and putting a new one up each month; such as you suggested. I'll maybe put more thought into that. It would also be great because they would have to subscribe to get the new online link each month. :)

Thanks for your feedback and for your input too, Lisa. I don't plan to ever stop publishing the email text version of my newsletter. If I do offer an online version complete with graphics - it will just be a small link at the top or bottom of the newsletter where they can click to see the newsletter in alternate form. But they will still get the complete text version also. :)
